To determine if the motor is defective first determine if the motor is getting power.

Nothing seems to reliably work to stop it opening closing door pushing ice water dispenser buttons tried everything i can think of.

Periodically the ice maker flap in the door will cycle continously opening and closing.
One of the tabs on the side broke off.
As a result the dispenser will not dispense ice.
This is a common issue with ge refrigerators as the solenoid that opens and closes the ice maker dispenser door gets corroded and stuck.
Once removed lift the dispenser cover off.
Then remove the 3 screws holding the housing in place and you will have.
The flapper might not be shutting properly and this will allow air in causing a huge block of ice to form inside the dispenser and ice bin.
If it doesn t look up the ice shoot to see if the flapper is opening.

Fortunately it is only takes about 10 minutes and a 25 part to fix.
The dispenser door motor opens and closes the dispenser door to prevent cold air from escaping the freezer.
